The Use Of Polyurethane In The Footwear Industry
Advantages of footwear polyurethane foam include high abrasion resistance, high flexibility, low product weight, suitable sole structure and favorable chemical resistance. Also, the direct injection of the polyurethane sole of the shoe along with the upper part of the shoe structure increases the final quality of the produced product and lowers its production costs.
The human foot is one of his most amazing organs, which consists of 28 bones, 33 joints and 19 muscles. The high sensitivity due to the presence of more than 350 nerve endings per square centimeter of the foot makes this wonderful organ of the body known as the second heart.
This sensitive part of the body needs to be supported, protected and kept in the most comfortable and appropriate state possible. The right footwear make the feet work better and support them against external factors, comfort and proper ventilation of the air around the feet.
The use of polyurethane foams in the production of footwear and soles has been accepted for the following reasons
– Improve foot function
– Good durability
– Less weight
– Good infrastructure
– Resistance to water, oils and chemicals
– Flexibility – Do not slip
– Appropriate surface tension
Other advantages of polyurethane foam for footwear include high abrasion resistance, high flexibility, low product weight, suitable sole structure and favorable chemical resistance. Also, the direct injection of the sole of the shoe along with the upper part of the shoe structure increases the final quality of the product and lower production costs.
Polyurethane foam systems for shoe soles are based on polyol polyether and polyol polyester. These two systems have unique features of structural performance and the choice of each of these two systems depends on the application of the final product produced from them.
Polyester polyols are slightly cheaper, more reactive and have lower viscosity. Polyether polyols have better chemical resistance properties, while they have higher viscosity and are a bit more expensive. Polyester polyols are usually used in coatings, adhesives, sealants and polyurethane elastomers.
The shoe industry is one of the places where polyester polyols are used in order to achieve the expected physical and mechanical properties. Polyester systems generally have a higher reaction speed and are solid at room temperature and require pre-heating for use. The need for heating to change the shape of polyester polyols from solid to liquid has made it difficult to use them.
Also, shoe foam produced with polyester polyols is less durable and less sensitive to bacteria and fungi. These features are the best advantage for the shoe market with a high variety of designs and customers who prefer to have shoes with new styles and materials to stay ahead of the fashion competition. Polyether polyols are more resistant to heat and chemical and oily environments. These types of foams are liquid at ambient temperature and do not require heating equipment and change from solid to liquid. And the shoes produced by this type of polyols are more suitable for work safety use in chemical environments. Casual shoes are produced using polyether based foam systems, while some other types of sports shoes such as tennis shoes are produced using polyester based foam systems. This difference is due to the superiority of polyester foams in terms of higher abrasion resistance, more significant tensile strength, and more suitable elongation at the breaking point.
